PURPOSE OF DIVISION:

Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW) is an international relief and development charity which envisages a caring world where people unite to respond to the suffering of others, empowering them to fulfil their potential. We are an independent Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) founded in the UK in 1984.  Working in 47 countries, we promote sustainable economic and social development by working with local communities to eradicate poverty, illiteracy and disease. We also respond to disasters and emergencies, helping people in crisis. Islamic Relief provides support regardless of religion, ethnicity or gender and without expecting anything in return.

The various field offices. Ultimately the barometer of success will be the timely capture of case studies demonstrating how donors’ money is being utilised to benefit those in need – both in the immediate aftermath of natural disasters as well as long term development projects.  the Communications Coordinator will work independently to film, photo and edit visual and audio content to professional standards when resources or time-scales are tight and/or a project needs special attention Islamic Relief Worldwide Iraq is implementing several projects in the sector of Food, WASH, Health, Education, GBV, and shelters.

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

The Communications Coordinator is responsible for providing compelling video, photographic and written content of IR Iraq programmes for the IRW Family, successfully providing both finished content for maximum exposure of the organisation’s great work as well as raw material.

 

This includes but is not limited to collecting and capturing the success stories of the transformative impact of IR Iraq’s work.  The role is field-based - 75% of the time will be spent travelling across Iraq – the role will involve close liaison with the various field offices. KEY WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

  • Day-to-day engagement with Programmes Department and field office staff
  • Regular engagement with citizen journalists and - where the need justifies the expense - freelancers
  • Regular engagement with Global Comms Working Group

 

SCOPE AND AUTHORITY

Scope of the Role | the role is fully responsible for delivering on creative briefs for Islamic Relief Iraq

 

Responsibility for Resources | the individual is responsible for the organization of the collateral and intellectual property produced and archived and responsible for hire, safeguarding and maintenance of all technical equipment. Based on available resources s/he is responsible for ensuring multimedia outputs to the highest possible quality.

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

The jobholder is accountable for fulfilling his or her roles and responsibilities in line with Islamic Relief’s values and principles of fairness, humanity, honesty, respect and fair treatment of their colleagues and staff.

The jobholder will report to the Country Director regularly, on the basis of annually defined key performance indicators (KPIs).

 

Area One: lead on collecting, shaping and developing compelling multiplatform offline and online collateral this should bear witness to the experience of the vulnerable and poor and confidently demonstrate the impact that IR makes – empowering staff, supporters and external stakeholders alike to take action

  • Work closely with programming staff to ensure all the powerful stories of the work that IR does is being chronicled with the powerful medium of video and photography
  • By definition the role will require exceptional leadership and project management in the form of writing clear briefs and overseeing video production and/or photography across multiple territories
  • Responsible for creating a wide network of ‘citizen video/photo journalists’ across the country and where necessary – freelancers
  • Regularly train field staff to ensure standards are continuously improving with the goal of reflecting global best practice
  • Develop a considered video/photography strategy
  • Ensure effective contingency mechanisms are in place during humanitarian relief situations to guarantee continuous reportage from the site
  • Meet the ever-evolving content needs of the IR Family, both proactively through a formal briefing process and in response to immediate needs
  • Harnesses feedback from across the IR Family, with a drive for continuous improvement
  • Work independently to film, photo and edit visual and audio content to professional standards
  • Utilise Digital Asset Management System for content upload for use by the Family
  • Provide direct service as required to the marketing needs of the Family
  1. Provide editorial leadership and approvals
  2. Provide relevant and necessary collateral as and when required for all key stakeholders
  3. Liaise with the editorial co-ordinator and graphic designer when needed
  • Abide by brand guidelines that guarantees a coherent look and feel of all communication

 

Area Two: Harness research and feedback from across the Family via IRW, and regularly benchmark within sector, with continuous analysis and improvement

  • Strengthen creative work by actively engaging and networking with the wider humanitarian and development community as well as the wider creative industry
  • Request analysis, measurement and evaluation of all collateral produced and used

 

Area Three: Other

  • Timely and efficient decision making; sound financial and resource management; assured quality of programmes and services; active and continuous monitoring, evaluating, learning and benchmarking within the department
  • Help promote and foster a culture in which Islamic principles, values and approaches which are adopted by IR are consistently respected, applied and complied with
  • Responsible for maintaining own professional development
  • To comply with IRW’s policies and procedures in undertaking roles and responsibilities
  • Performing other duties incidental to the work described herein. This requires a flexible approach to respond to any work requests from the Country Director at short notice
Qualifications & Preferred Skills

 

Experience

  • Technical experience of the following, to a high-standard in a corporation or NGO:
  • Copywriting in English and Arabic
  • Videography including corporate videos, infomercials
  • Corporate/Commercial Photography
  • Project Management – especially adept at dealing with evolving situations
  • Managing a team of field-based videographers, photographers and/or journalists
  • Sound portfolio of media-related work
  • Experience of managing and producing creative in a corporation or in an NGO
  • Significant experience of all elements of the video and photo production process – creative briefing, storyboarding, pre-production, post production
  • Experiencing in meeting customer demands to high-standards
  • Experience in managing large teams including creatives and freelancers
  • Proven record as a multimedia journalist or writer, operating within a management team
  • Experience in collaboration and coordination which lead to positive relationships with internal actors and external bodies
  • Experience in utilising Digital Asset Management tools
  • Experience of working in teams that are high-performing with a clear innovative direction
  • A track record in project management with experience of working with limited financial resources

 

Knowledge and skills

  • Strong ability to write as well as develop photographic and video collateral in an inspiring, accurate and descriptive manner, that is able to bring its reader/donor into proximity with beneficiary communities
  • Strong ability to gather, develop and deliver marketing collateral that serves the global brand requirements of a global NGO and captures humanitarian and development needs
  • Creative, inspiring and energetic, with an attention to detail
  • Excellent written English and Arabic language
  • Excellent knowledge and familiarity of software for video-editing and photo-editing
  • Strong team-working and able to work in a collaborative manner
  • Strong understanding of a charity dealing with poverty and humanitarian needs
  • Understanding of development and humanitarian work at an international-level
  • Innovative thinker, able to translate strategy into action plans and deliverables
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Good ability to work calmly under pressure to tight deadlines and balance competing priorities

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in Journalism, multimedia or related field; graduate degree preferred
