Overall purpose

The psychologist works as primary mental health caregiver within the PHCC medical team, according to identified needs and activity planning. He ensures representation of the MHPSS unit in the PHCC. The mental Health Counselor conducts mental health needs assessments of identified beneficiaries within Première Urgence Internationale’s mobile clinic catchment area, in collaboration with the MHT


He/she develops individualised treatment plans, leading individual or group therapy sessions, runs preventative mental wellness activities and makes referrals He/she contributes to the MHPSS monitoring through data collection. He / She implements capacity building for Première Urgence Internationale’s team member concerning mental health needs identification, management and referral in accordance with national and international standards. The psychologist ensures mental health consultation with identified beneficiaries. He/she contributes to mental health awareness and promotion in the camp with CHWs team according to the needs.


Responsibilities and scope of duties


  Work closely with all members of the PHCC mobile health teams and Première Urgence Internationale team to provide primary mental health to identified beneficiaries

 Ensure a focus on mental health promotion and improving access to mental health  care through individual consultation and group discussion, referral, follow up and mental health awareness activities.

 Ensure the training and capacity building of the medical team to develop a better understanding and treatment of mental health issues

  Ensure data collection and reporting of activities and on data collected in collaboration with the AMEA team



Qualifications & Preferred Skills



Required knowledge and skills





Education / Training


 At minimum, BA or BSc degree in the field of psychology


 Advanced university degree in clinical psychology

 Training in Psychological First Aid (PFA) (and / or Training of Trainers (ToT)

 mhGAP training or knowledge of mhGAP

 Gender-based violence (GBV) core concepts

 Child Protection and children’s rights

 Case Management standard operating procedures (SOPs) and referral process


Professional experience

  2+ years clinical practice in primary mental health care, with emphasis on psychological counselling / consultations (individual, family, or group) with vulnerable populations

 Experience in implementation of MHPSS activities

 Experience with an NGO

 Experience with Première Urgence Internationale

 Experience in community or public health



Knowledge and skills



 Able to work in a unstable circumstances and stressful environments

 Willing and able to be in the field daily

 Able to maintain confidentiality at all times

  Excellent written and verbal communication skills

 Excellent supervisory skills

 Able to provide sound analysis and make decisions independently

  Understanding of the local medical and mental health system, particularly in the intervention area, in relation to services available at different types of facility and the referral system.

 Knowledge or prior use of the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) guidelines for MHPSS

 Knowledge of local idioms / terms for symptoms of different mental health issues

 Knowledge of local areas and community structures

 Problem-solving and conflict resolution skills

Demonstrated interpersonal skills and respect for people with special needs
