About SEED Foundation: SEED is a locally registered NGO in Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), whose mission is to protect, empower, and support the recovery of survivors of violence and others at risk. SEED provides comprehensive services, integrating mental health, case management, legal and protection services, with psychosocial support activities to protect and empower survivors, and improve individual, family, and community well-being. SEED supports women, men, boys, and girls who are survivors of violence and other rights abuses, including survivors of conflict, gender-based violence (GBV), trafficking, torture, human rights violations, including internally displaced Iraqis, refugees, foreign citizens, and members of the host community. Through our Center for MHPSS, SEED strengthens skills of service providers and government actors through education, training and capacity building to better support vulnerable individuals and communities. SEED promotes policy, institutional, regulatory, practice, and social change to strengthen human rights, protections, and services for vulnerable individuals and groups. SEED combats human trafficking through services for survivors and those at risk including shelter protection; strengthen institutional protections through technical assistance, training, public awareness, and advocacy. SEED’s work reflects international best practices and expertise combined with local experience.

Role of the GBV & Protection Trainer: The GBV & Protection Trainer will lead to training and capacity building efforts to improve protection and reduce GBV in the KRI. The GBV & Protection Trainer will assess needs, lead the development of training curricula and materials, deliver training to law enforcement and other government actors who are key responders to GBV, and provide hands-on capacity building to participants in applying new learning in their workplaces. The Trainer will use interactive teaching methods including case studies, role play, group discussion, etc. This person will also oversee an additional trainer/capacity builder and a program assistant. This role will involve close collaboration and relationship-building with local government personnel. The trainer will assess the impact of the training on an ongoing basis, working with SEED’s M&E team.

Specific Tasks:

Training and Capacity Building (75%)

  • Collaboratively work with the MHPSS Technical Unit and other management staff in assessing needs.
  • Working collaboratively with other team members, lead design and development of training curricula and materials, adapting SEED’s current curriculum as needed.
  • Collaborate closely with the Program Manager to identify participants, keep them informed, and deliver training for local government personnel.
  • Deliver training using interactive and student-centered approaches.
  • Build a network of qualified guest instructors and coordinate their delivery of training for the program.
  • Conduct regular assessments of participant learning and tailor training accordingly.
  • Provide direct on-the-job coaching/capacity building to training participants to support them in applying new knowledge and skills in their professional roles, including through site visits, individual and group supervision/consultation sessions.
  • Ensure open, ongoing and fruitful communication with participants’ sending agencies.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records.
  • Contribute to strategic decision-making to strengthen and expand the program. 

Monitoring and Evaluation (15%)

  • Ensure all activities are properly monitored, documented, evaluated, and reported on.
  • Support program M&E, including the development of tools, to ensure that M&E systems provide adequate feedback on PSS interventions.
  • Generate feedback from participants and their sending agencies.
  • Develop lessons learned.
  • Make recommendations for program development and course correction.
  • Contribute to quality reporting.

Coordination and Organizational Representation (10%)

  • Maintain strong, effective working relationships with key stakeholders, particularly agencies receiving capacity building.
  • Represent SEED in cluster and working group meetings, with KRG and with donors.
  • Develop strategic partnerships and work closely with partners.
  • Provide content and input on communications materials including website, promotional materials, and social media, and ensure it complies with SEED’s storytelling policy. 
Qualifications & Preferred Skills

Essential criteria:

  • Degree in law, human rights, social work or other related field; master’s degree a plus.
  • Minimum of 5 years of programmatic and technical experience in GBV and protection with expertise in GBV prevention and response.
  • Extensive experience in training and capacity building for government actors in an international context, including assessment of needs, development of curricula and materials, and delivery of training through interpreters.  
  • Experience in the Middle East a strong plus.
  • Strong people and project management skills; strong leadership skills.
  • Experience in Iraq and/or Kurdistan Region a plus.
  • Strong belief in human rights and gender equality.
  • Good interpersonal, communication, and team-building skills.
  • Good diplomatic and persuasion skills.
  • High standard of spoken and written English, with Arabic and/or Kurdish a plus.
  • Good computer skills.
  • Ability to work in a stressful setting and adapt quickly to changing environments.
