Job Purpose


Yazda is seeking to hire 1 Mental Health Counsellor for its Mobile Medical Unit in Sinjar. The incumbent will provide psychological support to patients according to IASC and Sphere principles, WHO standards and procedures in order to improve the patients’ mental and psychosocial wellbeing. The incumbent will be trained by our partner Stichting Vluchteling in English so fluency is essential. Please note shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo a written and oral English language proficiency test. 

Duties and responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Project Manager, the Mental Health Counsellor is expected to fulfil the following duties:


-        Carrying out evaluation of mental health needs of patients and, together with the MD, establishing a diagnosis and a plan of treatment. Informing the patient and his/her relatives about the possible consequences of the illness and the drug treatment to follow (prescribed by the MD) and referring patients to other health professionals whenever necessary, in order to provide the most appropriate treatment and improve the patient's condition;

-        Providing psychological support (individual, family, group) to patients according to WHO protocols (PM+ and mh_GAP) in order to improve their mental health conditions;

-        Provide psychoeducation sessions for patients attending the mobile clinic on mental health and psychosocial wellbeing;

-        Assisting and training staff members whenever necessary in order to enhance the scope of MH activities.

-        Working in close collaboration with the other members of the Mobile Medical Unit in order to ensure the provision of best quality of care to patients;

-        Collecting statistical and monitoring data about mental health activities;

-        Informing the supervisor and the medical team about any issues or problems that may arise related to patients’ treatment in order to provide the best possible solution from a medical perspective

-        Ensuring that all patient information is kept confidential;

-        Participate in the creation of any material needed for counseling activities


Qualifications & Preferred Skills


  • Degree or diploma in psychology, medicine, nursing, community health or another related field
  • Essential 2 years’ experience minimum providing mental health services
  • Desirable previous experience with other NGO’s in MHPSS programming
  • Fluent in English, Kurdish (Kurmanji) language and Arabic

Good computer literacy with Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel
